How To Remove Epoxy From Concrete
So there are many different ways of removing epoxy and other sealers from concrete. Here’s how to remove epoxy from concrete floors considering the different types of concrete and methods. Pick out which of these is right for your project.
Shot Blast Machines
Shot blast machines can be used to remove epoxy topcoats and other topical sealant / paints from concrete floors. These machines use small metal pellets (shot) blasted down upon the concrete, removing any stubborn topical coating. These machines recycle the shot which reduces waste. They also have a vacuum system attached so most of the dust is removed. This is one of the best and quickest methods of removing thick topical sealants from concrete floors. The down side of using these machines is that they leave the floor kind of rough like a sidewalk so most interior concrete will have to be honed after use.
Shot blast machines can not be used on stamped concrete.
Floor Stripping
Another way on how to remove epoxies from concrete floors is to use a soy based floor stripper called “SCR1600 Soy Gel”. This product is made by SealGreen and is easy to use. The gel should be applied thick to concrete surfaces, then covered with masking plastic to prevent evaporation. The gel is then allowed to dwell for 12 to 24 hours. Plastic is removed and the gel and epoxy are scrapped up and disposed of. The concrete is then rinsed well using their oil eating enzyme cleaner that comes free with the stripper, and then pressure washed.
Creto DPS can be used after this process to expedite the drying of the concrete. The slab can be protected with another topcoat 24 hours after the Creto DPS is applied. That means no more waiting for the slab to dry after wet cleaning and stripping services.
Epoxies and other topical sealants like it can be beautiful and durable ways to protect your concrete but removing these products can be difficult. Find a contractor in your area if you need help or use either of these techniques to help you with your concrete stripping. Most large cities have a concrete store where you can rent a shot blast machine. You can also order “SCR1600 Soy Gel” at the link below.
